About production

By Ignacio Oliva

The film industry is changing actually. Last century, the century of film birth, the way of commercial for film was based on programs for "Theatrical cinemas”, auditoriums exclusively built to show films. With the advent of television, film distributing was opened to this way of general show, and later, with digital technology development, film distributing and sales diversified their way to show in different TV thematic channels.

But the way for using cinema by audience is changing too: Auditorium is replaced by domestic viewing. The answer of distributing companies is to organize big “on-line” platforms for producing and sale either movies, video games, series, etc.. Nowadays, cinema is no longer a business in itself, it is really a part of a broad concept that has been called "contents" and includes film and these others products: Right now, film industry has been less profitable than video games. In this way, many international film distributing companies and executive producers are considering a new way to operate: "crossing platforms".

This is a short words and incomplete summary of facts, but is close to explain how the production and film distributing goes on today and will be in next coming years.

LIGHT PRODUCTION
In recent years, film production has also been transformed with the development of new high-performance digital media with high resolution of image and sound. Fifteen years ago post-production and editing technic were digitalized, and so, all studios and technicians had to retrain. In recent years, shooting has been "digitized" too, in recording images and sound. In this way, negative film has been replaced by digital shooting, and this means lower cost of production. This new situation could helps many low budget and limited resources independent films projects.

Moreover, film projects that were unfeasible before can be developed now with helps of this so-called "democratization”. But all the other shooting costs are the same (more or less) - except those, which come directly from camera operations, and sound recording – and these films have their opportunity to develop in more flexible and responsive budget. Spanish cinema, in this way, is changing too. Leaving aside the new version of the Film Department Film Law, Spanish productions are growing and diversifying: Starting big-budget productions and live together with modest productions that raise bets, perhaps more risky or counter, and made outside the conventional production system, with a very little financial support. “Nobody's rose" is a film in this way of passion by a professional team: actors, technicians and film students who believe in this project. Our conviction is our inspiration, and that’s why we are working in pre-production of this film for more than a year.

PROJECT SIZE
“Nobody´s rose” is a simple film for producing: it is not a period film, it has no big sets or special effects. However, it is a choral film with a lot of different locations, majority for inside shooting. We cannot say that our story has been written with this condition, but surely conditioned by this, as many films with low budget requirements that arise in the world today.

However, in "Nobody´s rose" script there is a story, a story with dramatic and plastic power, with visual and emotional qualities. It can be not commercial -never knows- but will have artistic quality. Our conviction in this project becomes shared responsibility. Univers Proyecto Media Producing Company will work in all actions for increasing the current limited budget of project in order to have better working conditions for all work team.

“Nobody´s rose” is the first feature film of a couple of unknowns and has a difficult but not impossible way. Around here, we want to thank all team who are working hard nowadays in pre-production.

In 1913, during the shooting of "The Birth of a Nation", one day David W. Griffith gone away. Cast and crew were surprised because Griffith never leaved in a shooting time. After few hours of uncertainty, Griffith returned: He had stayed at city with his hat in hands, collecting money donations of stores, bars, restaurants, hairdressers, newspapers, reviews and trade he founded open. Mary Pickford recalled this old and forgotten episode to talk about the compromise and conviction of Griffith with technicians and actors who worked in that legendary film.

This little story of the first really important film in cinema history can, perhaps, illustrate that some things have not changed much in many ways: The first film must be invented.
